Is a 5500k fluorescent bulb good for studio light?
My wife has a small studio, and one of the bulbs broke. An umbrella light fell over and the fluorescent 30W bulb broke (type pb-30).
I think to replace it with another more powerful (65W) bulb (is ok, the umbrella supports upto 85W), but online they say the new bulb has 5500k light.
I remember buying a regular fluorescent lightbulb, and it was too yellow for pictures.
Is 5500k a good color for studio light (bright white, not yellow or blue.)?
Or should I go higher, like 5600k?
It's a touch warm, but it should be fine. Anything between 6500 and 5500K is within what is known as "daylight" balanced color temperature, which is ideal for studio light. Keep in mind, if you're wife's camera is digital, setting a custom white balance on a gray card is still required, and will balance any color fluorescent lamp you could use (including incandescent for that matter). So in a manner of speaking, it doesn't matter too much (it was a bigger deal when film was the predominant medium). But as a general rule, it is best to keep to daylight balanced bulbs for the sake of being consistent.
